The Medici family gains dominance over the city through Cosimo de' Medici, also known as "Il Vecchio" (the elder). This arouses enviers: players take the roles of head of Florentine families trying to infiltrate the Medici empire in order to become the city's new ruler. Thereto, they gather followers, ensure backup by the Church, and get influential positions in the Nobility and city council by investing money and through knowing the right people.

Il Vecchio is a tactical game in which adept and foresighted usage of the figures is key. The available actions are simple, but provide various possibilities and yet keeping the game at pace.
